Nana Patekar dies at 75 after suffering a cardiac arrest at his residence in Dona Paula, Goa, on Thursday, October 8, 2026. 

He was found unconscious at his Dona Paula residence and was taken to Manipal Hospital, where doctors attempted to revive him for around 45 minutes. He was declared dead at around 5:20 am, according to reports from the hospital.

The news has prompted tributes from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, political leaders and members of the Indian film industry, with many remembering Patekar for his distinctive acting style and decades-long contribution to Hindi and Marathi cinema.

Nana Patekar was at his residence in Dona Paula when he was found unconscious. According to reports, Patekar had complained of feeling unwell before he was found unconscious at his residence.

Doctors attempted continuous cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for approximately 45 minutes but could not revive him. 

A medico-legal case was registered, with a post-mortem examination expected to follow. Reports identified cardiac arrest as the medical event preceding his death, while further details remained subject to the post-mortem findings.

Tributes began pouring in shortly after news of Nana Patekar’s death emerged. According to ANI, Prime Minister Narendra Modi mourned the actor’s passing and highlighted his individuality, versatility, and creativity. Modi said Patekar’s contribution to Hindi and Marathi cinema was immense and that his death had left a deep void.

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant also mourned Patekar, recalling his connection with Goa and describing him as both a celebrated actor and a social worker. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari remembered his contribution to cinema as well as his work through the Naam Foundation.

Actors including Prakash Raj, Riteish Deshmukh and Ravi Kishan also expressed grief following the veteran actor’s death.

Who Was Nana Patekar?

Born Vishwanath Patekar on January 1, 1951, Nana Patekar became one of the most recognisable performers in Indian cinema. His film career began with Gaman in 1978, after which he established himself through roles in both Hindi and Marathi films.

Rather than following a conventional leading-man image, Patekar became known for playing intense, complex, and unconventional characters. His powerful dialogue delivery and restrained but forceful performances became central to his screen identity.

His notable films include Parinda, Prahaar: The Final Attack, Krantiveer, Agni Sakshi, Khamoshi: The Musical, Ab Tak Chhappan, Apaharan, Welcome and Natsamrat.

His role as Uday Shetty in Welcome also showed his ability to move from intense dramatic performances to mainstream comedy, introducing his work to a new generation of viewers.

How Many National Awards Did Nana Patekar Win?

Nana Patekar won three National Film Awards during his career. He received the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for Parinda, with the award presented in 1990. He later won Best Actor for Krantiveer at the 1995 National Film Awards and another Best Supporting Actor honour for Agni Sakshi at the 1997 National Film Awards.
