‘Winter Occurrence’ Or Emergency? -HMPV Infections in China

As the fresh breeze of the new year 2025 has begun, people are already setting goals and making resolutions for the year. But we are afraid that the air is getting a little heavier as the unpleasant news is dispersing globally, bringing us back the harsh memories of the pandemic. It was merely 4 years ago that we were all grasping air to breathe and to survive. The memories of the pandemic still chill us to the bone.

While the horrifying reality and memories of the pandemic are still fresh and the majority of people are facing the consequences of it, a situation in China has been sending an alarm. There’s a virus that is on the rise in China named Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a virus that affects our respiratory system. And ever since this news has landed every place, people are bracing themselves for precautions and to take the necessary measures. This news definitely sends a shiver down the spine, chilling us to the bone. But we, Corporate Soldiers, are not here to traumatize you or trigger you, but simply asking everyone to take precautionary measures. However, China recently tagged it as a usual ‘winter occurrence’. But is it really a usual ‘winter occurrence’? As the numbers are growing rapidly, the situation does not appear like a usual ‘winter occurrence’.

Current Situation In India:

In recent developments, India has detected 3 cases of HMPV infection, 2 in Karnataka and 1 in Gujrat. This time it was reported that another infant 2-month-old boy was rushed to a private hospital on 24 December 2024, experiencing the symptoms of respiratory infections.

Before We Begin!

Before we begin, and panic sets in, we must know about HMPV. Well, HMPV and COVID-19, both are respiratory viruses and show similar symptoms to COVID-19. But for those who are hearing this name for the first time, it’s time to gather the fact that HMPV is not a stranger to the scene; it’s long been circulating, causing milder infections, often mistaken for the common cold. And we all ignore such common cold symptoms unless they become severe. The situation in China is causing concern and definitely raises global concern. First discovered in the Netherlands (2001), HMPV is raising concerns globally. As rapidly as it’s growing in China, Human Metapneumovirus is as contagious as COVID-19. Respiratory virus HMPV belongs to the same viral family as measles and mumps, and it targets the respiratory system, causing severe infections across all age groups especially for children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems.

Symptoms of Infection:

We must note that the following symptoms can be mild, but can impose serious threats to our respiratory system which is already compromised due to COVID-19 and Delhi’s AQI. While HMPV raises a concern, we all must take a balanced nutritional diet that can support our immune system.

  • Cough- Persistent and produces mucus
  • Fever- Can be mild or moderate
  • Nasal congestion & runny nose
  • Body aches & Fatigue
  • Sore throat
  • Shortness of breath in severe cases

These symptoms usually appear after 3-10 days of possible contact or infection. Thus, we must be vigilant to notice any unusual changes in respiration such as difficulty in breathing, pneumonia and so on.

More Contagious And Dangerous Than Covid?

The Pandemic caused by COVID-19 has led to devastation that is irreversible. We still are facing the consequences and gave us a stark example of how infectious diseases can rapidly alter the course of history, human lives, and humanity. On the other hand, if we talk about HMPV, it usually causes a milder form of respiratory illness in healthy individuals, showing symptoms similar to the common cold or mild flu. But we must not be relaxed by this news and still be realistic and cautious, because the chance of experiencing a severe illness is still a concern, specifically for those who have a pre-existing vulnerability or illness. Therefore, while HMPV is a less aggressive disease, we must not ignore the facts about surging cases in China. Both respiratory viruses are equally contagious.

Current Scenario in China:

The current situation in China is an alarm for India too, as it is our neighbour. While HMPV is spreading rapidly, the reports tell that there is a concerning increase in hospitalizations, as respiratory illnesses claim more beds and strain healthcare resources. This news is both disturbing and alarming for each country. Health officials in China are continuously monitoring the situation, and urgently calling on the public to remain aware and take necessary precautions. India is also vigilantly monitoring the whole situation. In fact, India recently demanded the WHO to provide the timely information.

Precautions To Consider:

As the virus spreads all over China, we Indians must brace themselves as a precautionary measure. As soon as this news hit the block, Delhi Health Authorities issued an advisory for HMPV. In addition, we must look for possible preventions and precautions. Here’s how we can do that-

1. Enhanced Surveillance:

As a citizen, we along with authorities must ramp up surveillance for HMPV cases, particularly in regions with high travel traffic and urban centres. If we see any such case, we must share the information with our neighbours too.

2. Proper Hygiene:

Maintaining proper hygiene is a must and we must make it a daily habit. Good hygiene practices such as washing your hands properly and frequently before and after taking meals can prevent you from germs. Additionally, wear masks in crowded places and maintain your distance from them.

3. Preparedness- Healthcare Facilities:

Health Authorities, facilities and nursing homes must prepare themselves to prevent the possible spread. We all must ensure that medical professionals and staff are well-trained in case of emergency and possible outbreak.

Our Final Thoughts:

As reports are emerging rapidly, we must prepare ourselves for any case of possible emergency. However, as health authorities are working their way to prevent any possible harm, we all must remain calm and avoid panic. Corporate Soldiers wish you good health and a happy immune system! Stay calm and stay safe!
