Gujarat Chemical Plant Blast Kills 5, Injures 6 in Bharuch

Firefighters and emergency teams respond to a chemical plant explosion at Saykha GIDC in Bharuch, Gujarat.

A reactor explosion at Synzeel Pharmachem in Gujarat’s Bharuch district killed five workers and injured six others late Friday night, October 16. The incident occurred during a hydrogenation process, triggering emergency response operations and an investigation into the cause of the blast.

What Happened in the Gujarat Chemical Plant Blast?

The Gujarat chemical plant blast occurred at Synzeel Pharmachem in the Saykha GIDC industrial estate, located in the Vagra area of Bharuch district. According to reports published on October 17, a reactor with a capacity of 15 kilolitres exploded while the plant was carrying out a hydrogenation process.

The explosion resulted in five worker fatalities and left six others injured. Emergency teams responded to the incident, and the injured workers were taken to hospitals for treatment.

The blast also raised concerns about the immediate safety of workers and the surrounding industrial area as authorities began examining the circumstances of the incident.

Methylene Dichloride Gas Leak Reported After the Blast

The explosion reportedly triggered a leak of methylene dichloride (MDC) gas, creating a haze inside and around the plant premises.

According to India Today, workers and others at the site experienced severe eye irritation following the gas leak. Some workers also reportedly fell ill after exposure.

The blast scattered debris and damaged or displaced machinery within the facility, according to the report. Its force was reportedly heard across an area extending several kilometres from the site.

However, the reported gas leak should not be confused with the cause of the explosion. Investigators have yet to establish what triggered the reactor blast or whether the gas leak was linked to any equipment failure.

Where Did the Bharuch Reactor Blast Occur?

The incident took place at Synzeel Pharmachem in Saykha GIDC, an industrial estate in the Vagra area of Bharuch district, Gujarat.

Bharuch is an important industrial district in the state, with manufacturing and chemical-related businesses operating across its industrial zones. The incident has renewed attention on industrial safety and emergency preparedness at facilities handling chemical processes.

The immediate response involved local authorities and emergency personnel, while the victims were taken to Bharuch Civil Hospital and other hospitals in Bharuch and Vadodara for treatment, according to India Today.

What Is the Cause of the Gujarat Factory Explosion?

The exact cause of the Gujarat factory explosion remains under investigation. Reports state that the reactor exploded during a hydrogenation process. However, this information alone does not establish whether the incident resulted from equipment failure, a chemical reaction, operating conditions, or another factor.

Teams from the Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) and the Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health (DISH) are reportedly examining the incident and assessing whether applicable safety requirements were followed.

Bharuch Sub-Divisional Magistrate Manisha Manani said the explosion occurred during the hydrogenation process. The investigating teams are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident before drawing any conclusions.

Until the findings are established, it would be premature to attribute the blast to a specific technical fault or a confirmed safety violation.
