Apple May Explore a Screenless Watch: What the Report Says

Apple might be looking at a major rethink of how it handles its smartwatch business, with the company reportedly exploring wearable designs that could one day move beyond the traditional screen-based Apple Watch. 

The report mentioned by Times Now News states that the industrial design team at Apple has been considering multiple potential paths that the company can take in its smartwatch portfolio. Some of the ideas that have been discussed include a wearable with no display, as well as various screen technologies, sizes and form factors.

The potential is significant since the Apple Watch has historically merged both health and fitness tracking with a small display on the wrist. An Apple wearable that was screenless would be a completely different approach. It should be emphasized, though, that Apple has not declared that an Apple Watch without a screen would be released, and the designs reported should not be regarded as something that will surely be released in the future.

Apple Reportedly Exploring New Watch Designs

The mentioned exploration seems to be more extensive than merely taking the display out of an already existing Apple Watch design.

The company is also said to be contemplating the various kind and sizes of screens and other alternative form factors. Even the concept of round display has been reportedly explored, but such a design is not being marketed as an established product direction.

The report also indicates potential shifts at the other ends of the wearable portfolio of Apple. On the high-end, Apple is said to be considering models on top of its current high-end products, and cheaper ideas are possibly going to share the stage with the Apple Watch SE.

The official Apple products presently are the Apple Watch Series 11, Apple Watch SE 3 and Apple Watch Ultra 3, with the company having another portfolio entitled to the Apple Watch Hermes.

These cited ideas thus seem to be a wider analysis of what the Apple watch may be than a solitary verified substitution in the current range.

Could Apple Make a Screenless Watch?

In the case of Apple, a similar philosophy would imply that the wrist-worn device would be less like a miniature iPhone and more like a dedicated sensing and intelligence platform.

Why Apple Could Consider Removing the Screen

The changing role of wearable technology is one of the possible causes of such a direction.

Smartwatches first became popular with the introduction of smartphone-like capabilities on the wrist. With time, though, continuous sensing of health, fitness tracking, sleep analysis and other things has become more and more important.

A screenless device would be able to prioritize these functions and minimize the number of times users would have to look at their wrist.

Battery life might be a factor as well. A display is not the only component of the power needs of a wearable and thus eliminating it would not necessarily result in significantly increasing battery life. Eradicating a traditional constantly-on visual interface, though, might also help lower display requirements, depending on the design hardware and software that Apple has adopted.

Apple’s Growing Focus on AI and Health

During WWDC 2026, Apple introduced the next generation of Apple Intelligence and a new experience of Siri AI. Apple claimed that Siri AI would be incorporated into various products such as the Apple Watch, and it will be able to know the context about the person and be able to perform tasks across apps. The company also declared additional health-related innovations throughout its ecosystem.

Another way in which Apple has health ambitions is through its recent Apple Watch. The company claims that the Apple Watch is a health-oriented device, and its recent releases have increased health-related features. According to Apple Health newsroom, Apple Watch Series 11, Ultra 3 and SE 3 are some of the latest health-related products announced by Apple. 

The broader health strategy is also reportedly being reconsidered under services chief Eddy Cue, who has pushed Apple to move faster in response to competitors such as Oura and WHOOP and to rethink its health-related offerings.

It is against this context that a wearable with no screen has the potential to enable Apple to give more focus to sensors, health data and AI-assisted insights whilst relocating more of the visual experience to the iPhone.

That does not imply that Apple has chosen to take this approach. Instead, the exploration, as it was reported, can mean that the company is looking into the possibility of a traditional smartwatch interface remaining the most effective long-term wearable technology interface.

What Would Change to the Users?

The Apple wearable without screens will be able to transform the daily interaction dramatically.

Notifications, such as, would no longer be visible on the wrist. Haptic patterns may also be applicable to send alerts, whereas audio or Siri may be informative without necessarily having a screen. However, to have a fully screenless product, those options would need to be a lot more central to the user experience.

All functions like workout controls, navigation, messages, calls, payments and health information would have to be re-evaluated. Others might be possible via voice, gestures, haptics or an iPhone, but how these are actually implemented is unclear.

Challenges of a Screenless Apple Watch

Apple’s Broader Wearable Strategy

The exploration mentioned is noteworthy since it indicates that Apple could be contemplating the smartwatch not being an oversized computer on the wrist.

The wearable market is becoming more fragmented with multifunction smartwatches on one side, and more specific health and fitness products on the other. What the Report Could Mean for the Wearable Market

Should Apple ever create and commercialize a screenless wearable, its influence might not be limited to the Apple brand.

The history of Apple also explains why news of products that are being explored should be taken with a grain of salt. Hardware concepts may evolve significantly in the development process, and experimental designs may end up being postponed, substituted or abandoned.

Assuming that Apple is actually considering products that put emphasis on sensing, health and AI, rather than a display on the wrist, it would be an indication of a greater question to the industry: does wearable computing really need a screen?
