Rescue teams recovering a boat during a nighttime operation after a reported boat accident on the Ganga River in Vaishali, Bihar

A boat capsized in the Ganga River in Bihar’s Vaishali district on October 13, 2026, killing 13 people, most of them children, according to reports available on October 14.

The passengers were reportedly travelling to attend a banquet when the tragedy occurred in the Raghopur area. Rescue operations followed, while the state and central governments announced financial assistance for the victims’ families.

What Happened in the Bihar Boat Accident?

The incident occurred in the Raghopur area of Vaishali district, near Rampur Shyamchand village. According to media reports, the boat was carrying around 15 to 20 people who were travelling to attend a banquet when it overturned in the Ganga.

The exact circumstances that caused the vessel to capsize have not been conclusively established in the reports reviewed.

Initial reports recorded a lower death toll as authorities responded to the incident. The first report on October 13 said at least five people had died. Subsequent updates raised the toll to 11 and then 13 as more information emerged.

The changing figures highlight how casualty numbers can develop during a major water-related emergency. The latest reported toll available for this article is 13 deaths.

How Many Children Died in the Vaishali Boat Tragedy?

Children accounted for most of the reported fatalities, making the incident particularly devastating for families in the area.

Hindustan Times reported on October 14 that the 13 deceased included nine girls and four boys. The youngest identified victim was a six-year-old boy, while the oldest was a 16-year-old girl, according to the report.

The loss of so many young lives has drawn attention to the tragedy and the urgent need to establish the circumstances surrounding the capsizing.

The final passenger count, the precise sequence of events, and the cause of the accident should be distinguished from details that have been independently confirmed by authorities.

Bihar Boat Accident: Rescue Operations and Survivors

District officials and disaster-response teams were deployed following the accident. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and residents assisted in the search and rescue efforts, according to reports.

The administration also monitored the situation and arranged medical treatment for survivors. Hindustan Times reported that six rescued people were receiving treatment at Nalanda Medical College and Hospital in Patna.

The incident also prompted questions about passenger safety during river journeys. However, the available reports do not establish whether overloading, a lack of life jackets, or another specific safety failure caused the boat to overturn.

The cause of the accident must be established through the authorities’ investigation rather than speculation.

Bihar Boat Accident Compensation: How Much Was Announced?

Following the tragedy, Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary announced financial assistance of ₹4 lakh for the family of each deceased person.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed condolences and announced assistance from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF).

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the announced assistance includes:

  • ₹2 lakh for the next of kin of each person who died.
  • ₹50,000 for each injured person.

These are separate announcements by the state and central governments. The announcements establish the amounts of assistance declared, but do not by themselves confirm that every eligible family has already received the money.

The measures were announced as the administration continued to assist those affected by the tragedy.

Why the Vaishali Boat Accident Raises Safety Concerns

The accident has renewed attention on the risks associated with passenger travel on rivers, particularly when an incident occurs far from immediate medical assistance.

The reported passenger count of 15 to 20 people makes it important for investigators to establish the vessel’s capacity, the prevailing river conditions, and whether appropriate safety measures were followed.

These are questions for the investigation, not established explanations for the accident. Any conclusions about responsibility should be based on official findings.

For families affected by the tragedy, the immediate priorities remain recovery, medical care, and support for those who have lost loved ones.

Preventing Future Boat Tragedies

The Vaishali boat accident claimed 13 lives, most of them children, leaving families devastated. While compensation has been announced, the investigation must establish why the boat capsized and whether safety lapses contributed to the tragedy. Identifying the cause will be crucial to preventing similar accidents in the future.
