Jantar Mantar Loses Protest Site Status: 3 New Venues Named

Jantar Mantar protest site update featuring Ramlila Ground, Burari Ground and CBD Ground as alternative protest venues in Delhi.

Delhi Police has removed Jantar Mantar from its list of designated protest sites, naming Ramlila Ground, Burari Ground and CBD Ground in East Delhi as alternative venues for demonstrations. Announced on October 12, 2026, the decision has drawn criticism from Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke.

Which New Protest Sites Have Been Designated in Delhi?

Delhi Police has designated the following three locations for organising protests and demonstrations:

  1. Ramlila Ground: Central Delhi
  2. Burari Ground: Northwest Delhi
  3. CBD Ground (Central Business District): East Delhi

The updated notice was issued by Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar under Standing Order No. 48/2026, partially modifying the earlier Standing Order No. 48/2022.

The decision follows recommendations from a committee constituted by the Ministry of Home Affairs to examine alternative venues for public demonstrations. Detailed standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the newly designated sites are to be issued separately.

Why Has Jantar Mantar Been Removed as a Protest Site?

Jantar Mantar has long been associated with public demonstrations in the national capital. Its removal from the designated list follows a review of alternative venues for citizens to organise protests.

The change shifts the designated locations for demonstrations to three other grounds across Delhi. How protesters can use these venues will depend on the applicable permission process and the detailed procedures issued by the authorities.

How Has CJP Reacted to the Decision?

Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke criticised the removal of Jantar Mantar as a designated protest venue, alleging that the decision threatens the right to dissent.

Reacting on X, Dipke wrote, “Ab poora desh Jantar Mantar banega!”

The party’s response has added to the debate over access to designated public spaces for peaceful demonstrations.

What Happens Next?

The next step is the issuance of detailed procedures governing protests at Ramlila Ground, Burari Ground and CBD Ground. These are expected to clarify how organisers can seek permission to hold demonstrations at the newly designated venues.

For protesters and political organisations, the change means that Jantar Mantar is no longer listed as a designated protest site under the updated order. The practical impact will depend on how the new arrangements are implemented and how permission requests are handled.
