Abhishek Sharma Fastest to 300 Sixes Joins the elite club of 6 legends

Abhishek Sharma Becomes the Fastest Indian to Hit 300 T20 Sixes

The Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium (RGI) in Hyderabad was witness to a turning point in the world of T20 cricket on May 6, 2026. The final between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in IPL 2026 was undoubtedly a big game, but also a historic night for T20 cricket.

The young sensation of the Indian side, Abhishek Sharma is now a member of the most exclusive power hitting club in the sport. Sharma became only the sixth player in cricket history to hit 300 T20 sixes on Indian soil. But, to his credit he managed to break all the pace records and set the fastest Indian record of crossing the milestone, thus heralding a new era for modern Indian batting.

The Elite “300 Club” in India

For anybody to reach 300 sixes in one country is a long, hard and powerful process. That’s a benchmark only elite T20 batters in India can achieve, with the size of the boundaries and the pitch itself having significant variations.

Before Sharma’s historic night, only five players had crossed the 300-six mark in matches played on Indian soil across the IPL, T20 Internationals, and domestic T20 cricket. With this achievement, Abhishek Sharma joins some of the greatest names in T20 cricket.

The “300 Sixes” Elite List

Player Matches T20 Sixes in India
Rohit Sharma 320388
Chris Gayle 136 357
Virat Kohli 293 348
Sanju Samson 275 337
Suryakumar Yadav 278 317
Abhishek Sharma 153 302

Sharma is a new addition to the universe bosses of Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma and Indian legends.

The “Fastest Indian” Record

While names like Rohit and Kohli can be expected to score more sixes, Abhishek Sharma has certainly broken the record books when it comes to speed. But till now the difference between Chris Gayle’s efficiency and the pack was considered as untouchable.

  • Chris Gayle still holds the overall world record, having reached the milestone in just 136 matches
  • Taking just 153 matches to reach the milestone, Abhishek Sharma became the fastest Indian to complete 300 T20 sixes on Indian soil.

When he is compared to other Indian record holders it’s quite clear how fast he is running. But unlike Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli who have taken a lot of cricket to get to their level, Abhishek is a left-handed opener, and has managed to pack decades of big hitting into a rather short time. A sea change in the Indian T20 batting; from conservative runs to the aggressive ones in a brisk tempo.

How the Milestone Happened – SRH vs PBKS

Before the match against Punjab Kings, Sharma needed just two sixes to enter the 300 club. He didn’t wait for it, he went and hunted it down, as ever.

The left-hander took hardly any effort to hit his first ball with the PBKS bowlers to score. He first launched Arshdeep Singh over the ropes early in the innings to move to 299 sixes. The historic 300th maximum was soon followed as he started to turn the work on Marco Jansen and Lockie Ferguson and swagger over the fence as he normally does.

The game will include comparison of Stats (SRH vs PBKS)

  • Final Score: 35 runs
  • Balls Faced: 13
  • Strike Rate: 269.23
  • Sixes Hit: 4

It was not only extremely short, but very intense as well and far more than average in statistical consequences.

Why Abhishek Sharma Is Different

The 100-Six Season

In 2025, Sharma realized the dream of many Indian batsmen which was considered impossible earlier – to become the first Indian to fire 100 T20 sixes in a calendar year. The reason he’s where he is on the “all-time” charts at this young age is for being consistent with power hitting.

ICC No. 1 Ranking

He was named as the No.1 batsman of the ICC T20I Batting Rankings at the end of 2025, thereby putting his stamp on the T20 format of the game. During this time, he has been the top Indian batsman in the T20I format with scoring the most points ever by an Indian batsman in the T20I format against high scores of Suryakumar Yadav and Virat Kohli.

Comparisons With Legends

Other great cricketers such as the legendary Suresh Raina have noted that Abhishek has an unique set of genes from great cricketers. He is a blend of Mohammad Azharuddin’s class, and Yuvraj Singh’s swagger and incredible bat speed. Grace and violence: these are the elements that make him the face of the next generation.

Why This Matters for Indian Cricket

A performance like this is more than a personal achievement for Abhishek Sharma, it’s an indicator of the development of white-ball cricket in India. He has contributed significantly to the Indian team’s performance in the 2026 T20 World Cup, equally playing the role of an aggressive opener and a key match-winner for India.

The then 25-year-old Sharma is at the peak of his career. He is now in the top spot of the batting order and the new strategy in the job has brought a new power play strategy at the Indian end, without the “anchor” approach being utilized. Yes, the IPL is a dynamic organisation and Sharma is a ‘modern’ Indian cricketer in the truest sense, who is multidimensional, facts-based and one who is not afraid of the big stage.

Final Thoughts

But, the debate has come to an end and Abhishek Sharma is no longer a ‘rising star’ or ‘specialist’. He has been a record breaker and T20 giant. The feat made him the fastest Indian to hit 300 sixes on Indian soil, and will propel him towards challenging Rohit Sharma’s all-time six-hitting records.

As T20 cricket continues to evolve, one thing is certain Abhishek Sharma is no longer just a rising star, but one of the defining faces of modern IPL batting. And with his current trajectory, the debate around India’s greatest T20 opener may soon have a very clear answer.
