Why Virat Kohli’s Test Retirement Feels Emotionally Incomplete

May 12, 2025, will remain one of the most emotional days in modern cricket as Virat Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket. The cricket world was left stunned after Kohli announced his retirement on social media. The turn around was sudden and unceremonious, without the usual “Lap of Honour” or greeting scene and the announcement felt abrupt and emotionally incomplete.

The Shock Retirement Announcement

The Kohli exit was an extreme one, which is not necessarily in the grand manner that is witnessed in modern sport. The man who kick-started cricket and who has been under pressure and on scrutiny for quite a while has decided to grace the walk. It not only marked the end of an era, but also served as a major awakening of the “King” for not playing in the middle in whites. It wasn’t a vacuum that was created, it was an emotional vacuum.

Kohli’s Test Numbers & The Missing 10K Milestone

Kohli’s back story is so pristine with his India debut performance, making him the top performer out of the tournament. He has played more than 123 test matches for the country scoring 9230 runs in which he has 30 centuries to his name with an average of 46.9 runs per innings.

However, the biggest talking point remained the 10,000-run milestone. Kohli retired just 770 runs short of the landmark, a feat many believed he would comfortably achieve. That missing milestone became symbolic of a career that, despite its greatness, still felt unfinished. The unfinished journey is trailed by the title as well since there are not five digits in his name either, a feat of 9,320 runs is amazing but his journey hasn’t yet ended. Ten years ago he seemed like he would hit that barrier, and it’s just based on math, but it didn’t happen.

The Peak Years That Defined an Era

One should keep it in mind that it was one of the best years of Kohli’s career – with him possibly being the most effective in the world cricket format from 2014-19. In this form, he didn’t only make runs, he set his agenda for bowling attacks around the world.

For 2018, this is the time of his “magnum opus”. In a horrid 2014 English tour, Kohli came back to the British Isles, and finally emerged the victor, piling 593 runs in one series. Kohli, in the green tops of Johne’s, in Adelaide, in the swinging conditions of Edgbaston, in the searing heat of the sun was different from his contemporaries in the years that followed, due to his technical ability and mental toughness.

Virat Kohli’s role as the most powerful ambassador of Test Cricket

Kohli might have been able to bring more to the party than as a cover drive, possibly with his voice. Kohli was the most vocal and influential supporter of the T20 format when the relevance of Test cricket began to be asked in the midst of the growth of the T20 leagues.

He believed that Test was the highest form of cricket and he had a great love for cricket generally. He made it his top priority, so he kept an on-going group of fans engaged in the five days of the red-ball game. Not only a Test cricketer, he was a Test-marketer.

Captaincy Legacy and Cultural Transformation

As a captain he made an impact which was nothing short of a revolution. He was enlisted and transformed a team that was in transition and revolution into a team to be feared, particularly when they were on the road. All he had is a spirit of leadership and he was the one who didn’t have a rival when it came to leadership in Indian football history:

An Indian has taken home the most number of wins (40) in a row, as a captain.

A strong record of 58.82% win rate.

The Indian went on to win their first Test series in Australia (2018-19).

The dressing room culture, however, was changed by Kohli, as well. Was fascinated by fitness and ran at pace battery with a capacity to take 20 wickets in all conditions, and was a world-class fast-bowling attack. He brought a new attitude to Indian cricket – from “playing for a draw” to “attacking for a win” – which transformed Indian cricket and forever changed its identity.

Why the Ending Felt Incomplete?

The “unfinished” feeling is in part due to his latter years. In his later years he entered on a strenuous task with his own not unputdownable expectations. He was plagued by the outside off delivery issue as happened many times before and especially in his final Australia he played for, his problem became his story.

The absence of a fairytale ending and a final comeback to his peak form left many fans emotionally unsatisfied. Adding to that feeling was the fact that Kohli retired without playing a farewell Test match, despite widespread expectations and discussions around him continuing at least until the England series. Instead of a grand farewell, his Test journey ended quietly, making the conclusion feel incomplete for many supporters.

Why it is not possible to say how Kohli’s impact can be only statistically explained

Kohli’s greatness in Test cricket can’t be measured just in terms of averages, hundreds and milestones.

There has been one player that has scored more runs. Others have a better average. Individual records may be broken at some time in the future. However, few cricketers can evoke the sentiments of the cricket fraternity and Test cricket more than Kohli.

He was a role model of intensity when all else was geared towards convenience and entertainment.

He openly wanted to win, was emotionally involved on the pitch and was not afraid to be fit, thus bringing an aura of fearlessness and assertiveness to Indian cricket. Kohli revived Test cricket to become an aspiration for the youngsters.

Most importantly, he made it come alive in a way that put it into the realm of culture.

As Kohli was playing a big Test innings, even those who were not avid fans of five-day cricket knew the moment was significant not only because of the score on the board but for the emotions and symbolism that it represented.

Not always this influence can be quantified.

Final Thoughts : A Legacy Beyond the Scorecard

It’s been twelve months since Virat Kohli gave up on Test cricket; the attitude towards his retirement seems very complicated. Obviously, it was a very good career but there was no end in sight.

Perhaps it’s the in-completion of that which makes his retirement real.

Kohli will be remembered for his brilliance in the format he commanded and for his historic records and memorable moments around the globe. He also left out of his legendary challenges that he never faced, like breaking the elusive 10,000-run mark, reaching a final stretch with the baton to be dominant and the hope for a big finish worthy of his stature.

Finally, Virat Kohli’s cricketing legacy wouldn’t just be in the test format. Perhaps it is not the scorecard and milestones that will be remembered more for it, but for emotion, influence, aggression, leadership and the stories he created with each time he picked up a cricket ball.
