Claude Haiku 5.5: What Anthropic’s New AI Model Brings

Claude Haiku 5.5 AI model by Anthropic featuring an AI-powered digital brain

Anthropic has launched Claude Haiku 5.5, its latest small AI model designed for high-volume and cost-sensitive workloads. Announced on October 7, 2026, it is built to handle tasks such as summarisation, context compaction, database queries, classification, customer support, and AI agent workflows.

This model is described by Anthropic as the cheapest, fastest, and most capable small model to date. The company also says it is its fastest model at standard speed, while noting that its Opus models can run faster when using Fast Mode.

Why is Anthropic’s New 5.5 Getting Attention?

Claude Haiku 5.5 delivers enterprise-grade performance at a fraction of the cost, boasting an estimated 75% average reduction in operational expenses.

Key API Pricing Tiers:

Tier (Prompt Length)Input Rate (per 1M Tokens)Output Rate (per 1M Tokens)Estimated Savings
Up to 100K Tokens$0.10$0.5090% lower
Over 100K Tokens$0.50$2.5050% lower

Anthropic attributes the savings to lower API prices and changes in token usage. Its new tokenizer can use slightly more tokens per task.

What Is Haiku 5.5 Designed For?

To optimize operational expenses, Anthropic positions the new model as an efficient alternative for scalable tasks, preventing companies from overspending on flagship models for routine operations.

As highlighted by Anthropic, primary enterprise use cases include:

  • Summarisation
  • Context compaction
  • Database queries
  • Classification
  • Live customer support
  • Browser use
  • Subagent workflows

Anthropic positions Claude Haiku as an essential cost-saver for hybrid, multi-agent coding systems. While high-tier models handle multi-step reasoning, Haiku offloads routine, micro-level tasks to keep agentic pipelines both fast and affordable.

Primary Coding Models (Sonnet & Opus): Optimized for high-level reasoning, complex logic execution, and enterprise codebases.

Subagent Model (Haiku): Designed for low-latency, specialized subroutines where minimizing cost per API request is paramount.

How Does Claude Haiku 5.5 Perform?

According to Anthropic’s published benchmark evaluations, Claude Haiku 5.5 demonstrates substantial improvements over Claude Haiku 4.5 in computer-use and agentic coding tasks. On OSWorld 2.1 (offline subset), Claude Haiku 5.5 scored 72.4%, compared with 15.7% for Haiku 4.5 and 48.9% for GPT-6 Luna. On Terminal-Bench 4.0, it achieved 39.2%, compared with 0% for Haiku 4.5 and 16.4% for GPT-6 Luna.

These figures come from Anthropic’s published evaluations, not an independent head-to-head assessment. The results indicate improvements on these specific benchmarks, but real-world performance may vary depending on the task, tools, prompts, and implementation.

How Does Haiku 5.5 Compare With Larger Claude Models?

Claude Haiku 5.5 is not positioned by Anthropic as a replacement for its larger models across every workload.

Anthropic specifically says Sonnet 5.5 and Opus 5.5 remain better choices for complex agentic coding tasks, while Haiku 5.5 is better suited to narrower tasks such as summarisation, compaction, and subagent work.

The strategy therefore appears to be about matching the model to the workload rather than using the most powerful model for every request.

For companies processing large numbers of relatively focused AI requests, a smaller model with substantially lower API costs could make those workloads more economical.

Where Is 5.5 Available?

According to Anthropic, Claude Haiku 5.5 is available through the Claude Platform and major cloud providers, including Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Foundry. This gives developers multiple options for integrating the model into their applications and AI workflows.

Developers accessing the model through the Claude API can use the model ID claude-haiku-5-5.

Anthropic has also announced beta support for computer-use and browser-use capabilities through updates to its Claude Python and TypeScript SDKs.

The company positions Haiku 5.5 as a suitable option for speed-sensitive applications, including browser automation and live customer support, as well as high-volume tasks such as summarisation, classification and data processing.

Anthropic Also Cuts Claude Sonnet 5.5 Costs

Developers building on Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet 5.5 can now benefit from a 50% price reduction on prompt cache reads. Dropping from $0.20 to $0.10 per million tokens, the cost cut targets context-heavy and agentic applications to deliver up to 20% total savings on complex tasks. To further support API experimentation, Anthropic is rolling out monthly API credits for qualifying Max and Team platform subscribers.

What Does the Claude Haiku 5.5 Launch Mean?

The release underlines a crucial trend in software engineering: optimizing workloads by pairing the right model size with the right task. Rather than over-provisioning every interaction with heavy, costly models, teams can leverage lower-cost alternatives for high-frequency operations.

Anthropic’s focus isn’t merely launching another AI model; it is making enterprise-scale automation and multi-agent systems dramatically more affordable to deploy. Ultimately, adoption will hinge on whether this model can maintain the precision and dependability required for real-world production environments while delivering on its promised cost efficiency.

The Bottom line

Claude Haiku 5.5 brings Anthropic’s focus on speed and lower costs to a new generation of smaller AI workloads. Its reported benchmark improvements over Haiku 4.5, combined with substantially lower pricing, make it a notable option for developers building AI applications that need to handle large numbers of requests.
