Sanju Samson or Shreyas Iyer? Ravi Shastri Weighs In on India’s T20I Captaincy Debate

Sanju Samson or Shreyas Iyer

India’s T20I Leadership Debate Intensifies After IPL 2026

The Indian cricket world is abuzz with the topic of who should emerge as the long-term captain of India’s T20I side as the team enters a new white-ball transition phase. Recently, the focus has been on identifying a successor to take over as the captain of the team in the shortest format in preparation for the ICC men’s T20 World Cup in 2028 with several senior players set to retire.

The discussion took a further boost since the IPL 2026 where several Indian captains delivered impressive tactical performances while also remaining consistent with the bat. Two names have cropped up the most in the race to clinch the top two — Sanju Samson and Shreyas Iyer.

However, Samson’s leadership credentials have now received a major boost  from former India coach, Ravi Shastri, who has gone on record to say that he was a strong long-term leadership prospect for India’s T20I setup. His words have sparked a fresh round in the discussion around the captaincy and what direction Indian cricket could head for in the next two years.

Ravi Shastri Backs Sanju Samson in India’s T20I Captaincy Race

Shastri recently spoke to The ICC Review and said that Sanju Samson’s growth and development as a batter and leader have placed him firmly in contention for India’s T20I captaincy. The previous head coach of India, in particular, pointed out Samson’s experience of leading the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL and how he has grown up under pressure.

India’s recent ICC success has intensified discussions around long-term succession planning in the T20I setup, even though Suryakumar Yadav currently leads the side. But there have been speculations about selectors exploring leadership possibilities for the upcoming T20 series for the past couple of weeks.

Shastri claimed that Samson had undergone changes in the last 18 months as far as perception of his reliability and temperament was concerned. For years, Samson was looked upon as an extremely gifted, but flawed, player.  His IPL 2026 and T20 World Cup performances have strengthened his credentials as a credible leadership candidate.

Sanju Samson’s Leadership Credentials

Tactical Calmness and Modern T20 Approach

When it comes to his approach to being a good captain, being able to stay calm in pressure situations has been one of the biggest assets he has. Samson is generally seen as a calm and measured captain who relies on instinctive tactical decisions and proactive batting match-ups.

He was a proven manager and leader with younger players when he captained the IPL. He is also known to be a collaborative leader as opposed to an authoritarian one, which is increasingly prized in today’s T20 world.

This maturity seems to be a significant part of the reason behind Shastri’s endorsement. The former India coach believes Samson now appears far more assured and mature in pressure situations compared to the early years of his career.

Batting Consistency has Changed Perceptions

They were the reasons for Samson to not get himself in the leadership discourse in India for several years. All that changed in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 where he was one of the most impressive players of the India squad and was named the Player of the Tournament.

This has given the impression that he has the ability to take on bigger responsibility in the Indian system because he has been the reason behind the Indian side for making match-winning knocks in knockout games.

Selectors traditionally prefer captains who are consistent performers and automatic selections across conditions.

Why Shreyas Iyer Remains a Strong Contender

Proven IPL Leadership Record

However, the process of settling on a captain is not even close to completion as Shreyas Iyer has one of the best captain profiles among the squad at their disposal in white-ball cricket, even though he was given a public thumbs up by Shastri.

Iyer has already captained multiple IPL franchises and earned praise for his tactical awareness and dressing-room management. Kolkata Knight Riders‘ triumph in the IPL demonstrated his leadership skills and he has continued to dazzle in the subsequent seasons.

Iyer, on the other hand, is generally perceived to be a more pro-active on-field tactician as compared to Samson who would let the others take charge of the position.

Team Management and Dressing-Room Influence

Iyer is said to have good communication in the cricket world and has a good influence in the team. Former coaches and analysts have often praised his clarity under pressure and his ability to manage younger players effectively.

His captaincy trajectory is similar in a few players who captained teams in the present cricketing world and had gained tactical legs before becoming international captain.

Iyer was even once rumored to be a strong contender to succeed Virat Kohli as the T20I captain when India makes a change in the next phase, reports indicated.

IPL 2026 Has Become a Leadership Audition

IPL’s Expanding Influence on India’s Captaincy Decisions

Now the IPL is no longer looked as a home grown T20 competition. In the past ten years, it has become the main crucible for leadership training in India.

In the past captains were judged on their performance and how they handled pressure, now it’s also about their ability to shift gears, use data, dressing room culture and handling pressure. This has directly affected the way Indian selectors are thinking about prospective international leaders.

Both Samson and Iyer made the best of the situation during IPL 2026.

Iyer’s disciplined and proactive captaincy and Samson’s tactical versatility and consistent performance on the bat were equally impressive.

The growing influence of IPL leadership on Team India’s captaincy decisions reflects a broader structural shift in Indian cricket.

Ravi Shastri’s Opinion Carries Major Weight

How His Words are Relevant

Ravi Shastri’s cricketing career has been influential and impactful, and he has become one of the big names in the cricket fraternity.

As a head coach, Shastri got a chance to develop relationships with some great captains, which included:

  • MS Dhoni
  • Virat Kohli
  • Rohit Sharma

His knowledge and experience of dressing-room situations and captain’s temperament lends credence to his judgment on future captains.

In that sense, Shastri’s eulogy of Samson really suggests how the cricket world now sees Samson as anything but a batsman who has just one shot in his armoury – the attack. He is increasingly being viewed as a serious long-term leadership option for India’s next T20 cycle.

India’s Captaincy Philosophy Has Changed

Whether Dhoni, Kohli or Rohit

In the last 15 years, there has been a shift in leadership model in India.

Dhoni’s era emphasized calmness, instinctive game awareness, and finishing ability. Kohli’s era was one of intensity, aggression and fitness driven culture. Rohit Sharma introduced tactical flexibility and matchup-based captaincy to India’s white-ball setup.

The new generation of captains are now expected to mix:

  • Tactical intelligence
  • Data-driven decision-making
  • Dressing-room management
  • Media handling
  • Consistent individual performances

That’s why selectors are not only considering the numbers of these bats but also Samson, Iyer etc.

Challenges Facing Both Contenders

Sanju Samson’s Key Challenges

But Samson has a few problems to overcome:

  • Previous inconsistency at the international level
  • As the captain it’s hard to manage expectations.
  • Maintaining long-term fitness
  • Finding a balance between being a wicket keeper and a leader.

Also, a doubt exists whether he’ll be under any pressure as captain in the game and that may impact his batting naturalism.

Shreyas Iyer’s Challenges

The problems for Iyer are a little bit different:

  • The battle in the middle order of the batting line-up in India for the T20 format.
  • Injuries concerns and recent year back injuries
  • Questions over his adaptability against high pace attacks in certain conditions
  • Multi-format workload management

Moreover, in the future, the balance may be affected as India’s T20 cricket, which is based on power hitters, has seen a lot of teams opting specialist power hitters and flexible batting order in the games.

The T20 World Cup Planning and Selection Strategy of India

What Selectors could focus on

We think that popularity is not a key ingredient for India’s future T20 World Cup 2028 planning and will play a bigger part in the captaincy decision.

Selectors may evaluate:

  • Stable leadership, through a full leadership cycle.
  • Experience in international tournaments and adaptability in tactics.
  • Performance in pressure situations
  • Availability in other countries’ calendars.
  • Get in touch with younger players.

The management also may desire a captain they believe may be the linchpin of India’s T20 initiative for the next few years and not one they can junk a few seasons early.

Selectors are more likely to look at continuity in strategy and dressing room influence in the fast changing nature of white-ball cricket.

The Future of India’s T20 Leadership Remains Open

Although the decision to endorse Sanju Samson came from Ravi Shastri, it has not completely settled the debate, but it has definitely shifted the momentum to a certain extent.

Samson is likely to be getting a lot from his recent form thanks to his impressive consistency, cool demeanour and big-game performances in big tournaments. But, Shreyas Iyer’s tactical pedigree and the success he has achieved as captain with the IPL means that he is in contention.

At the end of the day India’s selectors will have to make the all-important decision as to what is vital for India’s next T20 era.

  • Tactical innovation
  • Long-term squad building
  • Consistent performances
  • Leadership temperament
  • Ability to take up ICC Tournament pressure

At present Indian cricket is at a stage of transition from one white-ball era to another and it is likely that the next captain will define the image of the side for a while.
