The Indian women’s hockey team has won Asian Games gold after 44 years, ending a long wait that began after its historic title at the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi.
On October 2, 2026, India defeated defending champions China 1–0 in the women’s hockey final at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in Japan. The victory gave India its second Asian Games women’s hockey gold and its first since 1982.
India’s 4-Decade Wait for Asian Games Women’s Hockey Gold
India’s previous Asian Games women’s hockey gold came in 1982, when the Games were held in New Delhi. Hockey India’s official medal records list the Indian women’s team as the gold-medal winner that year.
India reached the Asian Games women’s hockey final again in 1998 and 2018, but finished with silver medals on both occasions. In 1998, India lost the final 1–2 to South Korea. Twenty years later, India reached the final again in Jakarta but lost to Japan, taking another silver.
Between those two finals, India also collected bronze medals at the 1986, 2006 and 2014 Asian Games, before adding another bronze in 2023. The 2026 campaign finally took India back to the top of the podium.
The 2026 victory over China therefore ended a 44-year gap between India’s Asian Games women’s hockey gold medals, with the two titles coming in 1982 and 2026.

India Beats China 1–0 in 2026 Asian Games Final
India faced China in the gold-medal match on October 2. China, the defending Asian Games champions, put India under pressure early. India, however, found the breakthrough in the 10th minute, when Lalremsiami scored with a reverse-hit to put her team 1–0 ahead.
India then had to protect its narrow advantage as China kept creating attacking opportunities. The Indian defence held firm, and goalkeeper Savita Punia produced a crucial penalty-stroke save to prevent China from drawing level. India maintained its 1–0 lead through the remainder of the match to secure the gold medal.
1982 to 2026: Two Asian Games Gold Medals
The 2026 triumph is significant in the history of Indian women’s hockey because it is only the team’s second Asian Games gold medal.
The first came at the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi. Forty-four years later, the team returned to the top of the podium by defeating China in the 2026 final.

Lalremsiami Scores the Decisive Goal

Savita Punia Makes Crucial Save
After India took the lead, China continued searching for an equaliser. The Chinese team earned a penalty stroke, but Indian goalkeeper Savita Punia saved the attempt, helping India retain its advantage. Hockey India and the International Hockey Federation both highlighted the save as an important moment in the final.
India’s defence subsequently protected the one-goal lead until the final whistle.
Asian Games Gold Also Secures Olympic Qualification
India’s women’s hockey gold medal also brings an important qualification outcome.

India’s Long Wait Ends in Japan
