The Jamui harassment case is resurfacing on social media after its video went viral, showing two Class 10 students allegedly being harassed by a group of people in Jamui district of Bihar.
Videos circulated on social media purportedly show the goons were moral policing and trying to assault both the girl and the boy. This video has triggered widespread outrage in India. One guy had covered his face on the camera to hide his identity, and he groped the girl and tried to take her away.
After public demand, Police have arrested three people, formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT), and launched a separate case against 120 suspected social-media profile holders.
The incident took place on September 19, 2026. A Class 10 girl and her male classmate were returning on a two-wheeler from a hill area. Then a group of men allegedly prevented them from leaving. The footage showed the girl being inappropriately touched and one person attempting to lift her.
The case has since become both a criminal investigation and a political controversy in Bihar.
What Happened in the Jamui Harassment Case?
Two minor students who were studying at a local coaching institute had gone to the Madwa Pahar area (also known as Mawara Hill) on the outskirts of Jamui town on September 19.
As per the reports made during the police investigation, they were returning on a two-wheeler scooter when they were stopped by a group of men, some of whom had their faces covered.
According to the Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), K.S. Anupam, the incident occurred between the estimated times of 6:15 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. The location was around 3 km from Jamui town, which is located near the main Jamui-Lakhisarai road.
The viral videos that later appeared on Instagram Reels reportedly show members of the group surrounding the students. One video appears to show a person with his face covered grabbing and dragging the girl, while the boy attempts to intercept him. Other footage shows the students begging the group to let them go.
Police have treated the Jamui harassment case involving minors and registered an FIR under relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Three Arrested in Jamui Case
Five arrests have now been reported by the police who are connected to this incident.
However, the number of people allegedly involved is higher. Police said around seven people had been identified, while another police account put the number of people whose names had emerged at seven to eight. The investigation is still in continuation to establish the role of each person.
Most importantly, police have said that not all have been arrested.
Latest reports say three of those arrested were reportedly aged between 17 and 18.
The 7–8 figure refers to people identified or named during the investigation, not the number arrested. The investigation remains ongoing.
How Did Police Identify the Students?
Jamui harassment case investigation began after videos of the incident went viral. Jamui SP Bishwajeet Dayal said police had not initially received a complaint from the student as they were already traumatized and were not in the situation to log a complaint.
After reviewing the footage, police traced the victims using details visible in the video, including a vehicle registration number.
On September 21, the girl later informed her family, and her father filed a written complaint, as reported by the Indian Express. A woman assistant sub-inspector recorded the girl’s statement at her home.
Viral Video Becomes a Separate Legal Issue
The videos have played a central role in bringing the case to police attention, but their circulation has also created a separate legal issue.
Police have seriously appealed to the public not to share or circulate videos that reveal the identity of the minor victim. There is special focus on preventing further disclosure of the child’s identity.
The 120 profiles are not 120 people accused of the original harassment. They relate to the separate issue of circulating material that allegedly exposed the minor’s identity.
What Happens Next?
The Jamui harassment case remains under investigation. Three people have already been arrested, while police are continuing efforts to trace other suspects. The alleged main accused, Nandan Yadav, was injured in a police encounter on September 22 and taken to hospital, according to police reports.
The SIT is also examining the video evidence to establish the individual roles of those allegedly involved and determine how the incident unfolded. Police have identified around seven people from the footage, with further action expected against those still being traced.
